ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:

Diana Lopez is a Deaf, Latina artist from Los Angeles, CA. Diana says without art, she would not be able to express her true feelings. Her artworks have different ways of sharing her experiences, both good and bad. They also help to shed light on the Deaf culture and to educate communities about “who and what we are”. One very important aspect of Diana’s artwork is texture, which allows for all deaf and blind people to feel the art. It is extremely important to her to be sure that all kinds of people feel included in the Deaf community. The use of colors, symbolism, and brushstrokes, which she likes to call “Art of emotions,” are intentionally used to express her feelings. She hopes people will apply their own experiences to recognize we are not alone in this world. This piece is symbolic of the deaf community’s way of communicating through American Sign Language. “It’s our language to talk using our hands to express ourselves, or to have a voice to be seen and heard.”
